30 Years of Community, Care and Connection

Thirty years is a long time to keep showing up.

Not when it’s convenient. Not when the cameras are rolling. Not only when funding comes through. But on cold Sydney mornings, in community halls, drop-in centres and quiet carparks, for people much of the world has chosen to overlook.

That is what the Coptic Orthodox Community Outreach Service — COCOS — has been doing since 1995. And this year, we celebrate 30 years.

When we began thinking about how to mark this milestone, we considered all the usual things: a formal dinner, a glossy report, a highlight reel filled with numbers and achievements. But none of it quite captured the heart of this organisation.

Because COCOS has never really been about polish. It has always been about people.

So that’s how we’re choosing to tell this story.

Where It All Began

Sydney in the mid-1990s was, in many ways, a city on the rise. The economy was recovering, the Olympics were on the horizon, and there was a sense of optimism in the air.

But not everyone shared in that momentum.

Homelessness was growing. Social services were stretched. And for many people living rough or facing crisis, the distance between needing help and receiving it felt impossibly wide.

Within Sydney’s Coptic Orthodox community, a small group of people looked at that gap and asked a simple question: What can we do?

The answer was humble at first. A few volunteers. Some food. A willingness to sit, listen and care. No grand strategy. No large-scale infrastructure. Just a commitment to show up consistently and serve with dignity.

That was the beginning of COCOS.

The Work, Up Close

Thirty years later, the scale has changed dramatically.

Today, COCOS operates across five sites — Parramatta, Woolloomooloo, Liverpool, Blacktown and Gosford — providing hot meals, drinks, clothing, essential supplies, outreach programs and wraparound support to people experiencing hardship across Sydney.

The logistics are bigger. The challenges are more complex. The needs continue to evolve.

But ask anyone involved what the work actually feels like, and the answer is still surprisingly simple.

Because the heart of COCOS has never been found in statistics or systems. It’s found in small human moments: a conversation over a meal, remembering someone’s name, helping someone feel seen again.

Those moments happen quietly, week after week, across all five locations. Most will never appear in a report or social media post.

But in many ways, they are the whole point.

The People Behind It

Spend enough time around COCOS and one thing becomes immediately clear: people stay.

Volunteers who first joined as university students are now raising families of their own. Staff members who planned to help “for a little while” are still here more than a decade later. Donors who supported the organisation before it even had a website still continue to give faithfully today.

There is something about this work that gets into people and stays with them.

And perhaps that’s because COCOS has never simply been an organisation. It has become a community.

A community built around loyalty — not just to a cause, but to one another, and to the people who walk through our doors each week.

The familiar faces. The regular conversations. The quiet victories: someone finding stable housing, reconnecting with family, securing work, or simply having a better day than the one before.

When people are united by something deeper than a job description, they build something that lasts.

What Thirty Years Really Means

Over three decades, COCOS has supported thousands of individuals across Sydney.

That’s thousands of meals shared. Thousands of conversations held. Thousands of moments where someone felt acknowledged, valued and cared for.

But numbers only tell part of the story.

The real story lives in the memories of the people who were there — the volunteers loading vans before sunrise, the staff answering late-night calls, the community members who found hope in moments they least expected it.

Sydney has changed enormously since 1995. Governments have changed. Funding models have shifted. The face of homelessness has evolved — becoming younger, more visible, and in many ways more complex.

Yet the core of COCOS has remained remarkably consistent:

Meet people where they are.
Treat them with dignity.
And keep showing up.

On Faith and Service

COCOS was born from a faith community, and that foundation has always shaped who we are.

But faith has never been used as a barrier to support — only as a reason to offer it.

For thirty years, the question has never been, What do you believe? The question has always been, What do you need?

That spirit of quiet hospitality — welcoming everyone, serving anyone, judging no one — remains one of the defining characteristics of COCOS today.

And it is often the thing people remember most.

Looking Ahead

Thirty years is worth celebrating. But COCOS has never been an organisation that stands still for too long.

Because the need is still here.

Housing affordability pressures continue to rise. Cost-of-living challenges are pushing more people into hardship. Mental health struggles and social isolation remain deeply felt across our communities.

If anything, the need for compassion, connection and practical support has only grown stronger.

And yet, some things remain beautifully unchanged.

The volunteers still turn up.
The staff still give more than is asked of them.
The community still rallies together.

That is what thirty years of trust looks like — not a trophy on a shelf, but a community that knows when help is needed, COCOS will be there.
